Ground Applications:

Mineral Exploration:

Magnetics are the most used geophysical method for gold, diamond, platinum group metals and base metal exploration. Select any type of gold project, (quartz vein, sulphide-hosted, shear zone, alluvial or placer) and you will see magnetic reconnaissance maps or detailed maps for drilling. In gold exploration, magnetics helps in direct detection of associated mineralization and for mapping large- and local-scale structure (faults, dykes, and shear zones). In diamond exploration, the magnetic technique helps assess kimberlites as shown by the example of leading junior exploration groups.

Archaeology:

Archaeologists are increasingly looking at remote sensing methods as techniques to explore sites with minimum disruption to the surroundings. This work is delivering new means of mapping prehistoric and historic sites in three dimensions rather than traditional two-dimensional methods. Magnetics, Electromagnetics, GPR are the primary remote sensing technique that offers both ease-of-use and cost efficiency.Main benefits lie in the ability to resolve details non-invasively, the wide range of artifacts and cultural objects that are detectable, and the low-cost of magnetics in comparison to other methods.

Earthquake Research:

Gradiometry is emerging as a promising method based on reports of piezomagnetic and/or piezokinetic effects prior to large earthquakes. Studies show large amplitude magnetic responses weeks and hours before events. Smaller events appear to exhibit less coherent patterns; likely due to the lack of sensitivity of traditional magnetic instruments.

Environmental Engineering:

Magnetics are one of the most employed methods in environmental and engineering site audits, remediation, and assessments. The high level of use in industry, research and teaching reflects the versatility, efficient data acquisition, ease-of-use, and effectiveness of magnetics for various types of applications. Availability of results in the field make magnetics ideal for rapid reporting to clients.

Unexploded Ordnance (UXO):

Unexploded ordnance or UXO are potentially dangerous munitions of all sizes that remain buried in the earth from wars – even to this day. Many countries have UXO detection issues, including the UK, Australia, SE Asia, the Middle East and the United States. The real issue with UXO comes when a use is proposed for a site, such as an infrastructure or construction project. Then, the requirement becomes finding the UXO through surveying and performing UXO clearance activities until the site is clear and it is approved for safe use. Magnetics locate buried military ordnance by measuring differences in the earth’s magnetic field arising from ferrous content in the target ordnance. In addition, magnetometry can be enhanced by using electromagnetic methods which reflect the object’s metallic conductivity. Both methods are valid and can be used individually or in combination.

We sell the Aquaculture Biomass Monitor (ABM) to automatically estimate fish size, size distribution and monitor fish behaviour, in operational salmon net pens. The purpose of the device is to provide operators with a more accurate estimation of average fish size and size distribution during the growth cycle, in order to maximize productivity and optimize slaughter timing and to detect abnormalities such as escapement or disease.
